Dear Rowdon,
Thank you for your letter of the 22nd April.
I have not been entirely happy about the idea of producing an
entirely specialised book for Germany, and on my arrival in Rome, I discussed
the whole matter with Baron Testaferrata, and ascertained that a somewhat
similar type of booklet was compiled by him for Lindex Press Ltd., under the
name of "WHO".
Lindex Press found that a booklet of this type, which was highly
specialised, was not a success because the Germans were unwilling to include
their names in the type of booklet on which their competitors' names appeared,
although the English edition was popular in Germany. In practice, the whole
publication was a substantial loss.
In our dummy booklets, there are forty-eight pages, and we wonder
whether so many pages could be filled by you in one specialised industry; if not,
the remaining pages would have to be filled without any income arising therefrom.
The third difficulty, and one of the most important from one point of
view, is the fact that if the booklet is not somewhat on the lines of our existing

publication, our distribution plans will fall through.
We have no objection to any number of specialised pages dealing
with whatever industry or product you might care to include in the book, but
you will appreciate that there is plenty of scope for the inclusion of such
specialised pages in the existing dummy. Although therefore you can have special-
ised industries, it is essential for our overall plan for you to obtain publicity
for all the various sections contained in the dummy, even if some are without
remuneration.
In all circumstances, we have decided that you must not go ahead with
the compilement of a specialised book, except on the lines agreed upon by us.
With regard to printing, we have now decided to purchase our own
Vari-Typer and Multilith Machine, upon which everything will be printed in Rome.
I shall be very happy to see you in London on my return, after the
12th May.
