Pope John Paul I who died
on September 28 at the age of
65 had reigned for little over a
month. Indeed, his reign, one
of the shortest in the long his-
tory of the Papacy, was too
entirely brief for any assess-
ment of, or even sound specula-
tion upon, its likely course to
be made. As a candidate for the
papacy after the death of Pope
Paul VI he was so far from
being in the minds of anyone
as a future holder the office
that a great many of the elect-
ing cardinals knew. of him,
rather than knowing directly
the man or his work. Yet after
one of the shortest conclaves
ever to.-be held, it appeared
that, once certain matters had
becomé clear to the cardinals,
