Dear Maurice,
Many thanks indeed for the rest of THE MAD PRIMATE. I've now read
the whole book and I'm sorry to tell you that I don't think this will
achieve successful publication. I think a lot of it's very interesting
stuff, but in the end I failed to see the point, or how to categorise
the book, how to sell it, where a bookseller would put it etc. I'm
very sorry to disappoint you but I'm not the right agent for this
and I'm returning the material.
With best wishes,
Yours,
Bruce Hunter

Dear Dr Rowdon
Thank you for coming in yesterday morning.
I enjoyed our
conversation very much.
I'm afraid though that on thinking
things over I am forced to conclude that I really would not be
the right agent for you. I think I am out of my depth with
TIDES OF MADNESS IN THE HUMAN BRAIN: I find what you have to
say interesting but I can't immediately think of five or six
publishers to whom I would submit it and in those
circumstances I know you would not be well served by me.
You
need someone who can proceed with confidence, someone who is
more familiar with a wider range of non-fiction editors in
London than I am right now.
I hope you don't feel I wasted your time. I was tempted, but
on balance I am convinced that my decision is the right one
for both of us. I am sorry I don't feel able to help you and
I hope that you will find a good
and confident
agent who
will place your work without difficulty.
With best wishes, and thanks for giving me the chance to
represent you.
Youys aincerely

P S: should I return your material? I am not sure about
using this mailing address for you so I'll hold it for a week

it back.

Dear Mr. Rowdon:
Thank you for your letter of October 23 to Owen Laster.
He has asked me to respond. We are very interested in
reviewing sample material from your book. Two chapters
and an outline would be quite satisfactory. I hope we
will respond well and be able to work with you. I look
forward to receiving the material.
Sincerely yours,

Re: FINGERPRINTS ON THE WATER
Dear Maurice Rowdon,
Thank you for submitting the play enclosed herewith for return.
While I think it has definite merit, and am pleased with the
opportunity to read it, I regret not feeling able to include it
among those scripts I view as having the best chances for
production at the Alley in upcoming seasons.
I very much appreciate your interest in the Alley Theatre, and
wish you all success in other submissions.

MAURICE TEMPLE SMITH
Dear Sirs,
Further to my letter of 28th January on the subject
of Maurice Temple Smith and my contract with him for a
book to be called MONASTICISM, I enclose a copy of the
contract for your examination.
You will see that Clause 12 states clearly that in
the case of an American publisher not being found another
subject will be mutually agreed. Maurice Temple Smith
has consistently turned down all suggestions for another
book.

Dear Don,
Can you answer me one thing? How is it you
always leave Britain the day before I arrive?
I enclose A DAI IN BLACK, to see if you want
to try to do anything with it in LA, We wrote
this for Mario Perrari in Rome, he likes it very
much and has taken it to Warner Bros as his next
film with them. I hope they like it too. By the
way they very nearly did JULIA.
The Italians would like an American or Btitish
director with a name.
Don't show it to Harold because he hasn't got a
name. Give him my love but tell him I'm still very
suspicious of him since he doctored my JULIA script
and hawked it round in the States without my name.
you do that to a writer he never forgets. I
Ogpe a copy of his script in one of my drawers by
the way. But don't let it spoil his Christmas.
The result of that little experience is that
A DAY IN BLACK is covered for copyright in just
about every country in the world.
I live in San Gimignano and Venice mostly.
We might meet here when you come back, or my number
in Venice is 32066.
All the very best for Christmas,
Yours ever,
